Name & Meaning

Bakdolbup The original name of Kuksundo is Bakdolbup.

  • Bak Bak means sun, light, sun light, and radiant brightness

  • Dol Dol signifies “revolve around” and “return,” as well as it connotes the movement of Eum and Yang energies. It also represents the natural law of birth, growth, death, and dissolution where all things emerge through change and flow, and ultimately return to the fundamental substance of the universe which is the primal form before creation.

  • Bup Bup means a “law” or “method.”

Kuksundo

  • Kuk Kuk means that it sees the universe as one big nation.

  • Sun In the Eastern Sun-do tradition, the character Sun(仙) is composed of two elements: a radical meaning “human” (亻) and a character meaning “mountain” (山). This symbolizes the relationship between humans and mountains. In contrast, in Kuksundo, the character Sun (亻天) is fashioned with a radical meaning “human” (亻) and a character meaning “sky” or “heavens” (天). This signifies the connection between hamans and the heavens or cosmos. Thus, the character Sun (亻天) is used to convey the following meanings: Sun as a “heavenly human,” Sun as “to go through” or Bool as “to realize”.

  • Do Do means a path, method, and principle.

Therefore, Kuksundo means “Seeing the universe as one nation, and represents the principle law or way of great nature in which humans and the cosmos are connected mystically.”

Sun-do-joo: The truth of heavenly-human belongs to humans

  • Jung-gak-do-won Rightfully realize the source of truth

  • Che-ji-che-neung Acquire the truth and ability through the body

  • Sun-do-il-hwa Achieve harmony as one under the heavenly-human way

  • Goo-hwal-chang-saeng Save all living beings under the sky

Accordingly, Bakdolbup is a training method designed to develop the body, mind, and spirit to their highest potential by absorbing light energy, like that of the sun, into the body through assimilation with the laws of great nature which has ever-revolving nature.

Do-in-do-song, the Ode of Guiding and Leading the Way

Do-In-Do-Song means a sound that leads us to Do, the Way, and we are led into it by listening to the sound filled with the true essence of great nature.

Currently, in the practice centers, before practicing Danjeon Haeng-gong, we focus our minds by listening to the Do-In-Do-Song, consisting of 465 characters. This is a theoretical explanation, distilled from the extensive studies of Do and human nature, that outlines the naturally formed practice stages of Jung-gak-do (Jung-ki, Gun-gon, and Won-ki).

The myriads of beings in the universe sustain their reality through the function of Jung-ki (middle-energy), and Jung-ki is the central principle wherein Eum (yin) and Yang are unified in balance. "Grasp and hold on to the Middle" of Confucianism, "Embrace the one and keep the Middle" of Sun-do, and "Follow the Middle-way" of Buddhism, all of these are grasping and keeping the "Middle." The changes of Eum and Yang, the ascending and descending of Water and Fire, and the circulation of energy and blood, are all driven by the unifying force of the Earth-element. The Middle of the human body is the spleen and stomach, and they represent the Earth-element of the body. Therefore, Jung-ki is such a crucial physiological function of the body. The human body sustains life when Eum and Yang are unified and dies when they are divided. Jung-ki possesses the genuine character that encompasses both Eum and Yang, the controlling character that regulates Eum and adjusts Yang, and the metabolizing character that reflects the changes between existence and non-existence. The lively force comes out from the lower Danjon, enters the liver, becomes fresh energy and blood, and nourishes the entire body. Therefore, the fifty-Earth-element postures of Jungki-danbup is made the first stage of the practice of cultivating the Way.

The synthesized energy of Heaven's auspicious function, Earth's virtuous energy, and the Five-energies (water, wood, fire, earth, and metal) transforms into the birth of all beings. Gungon-ki (heaven-earth-ki) is the supreme source of the transformational birth of all beings. We, as living beings, are composed of Jung (essence), Ki (mind & spirit), and Sin (heart), and these are called the Three-origins. Gun (heaven) is the origin of Heaven, Gon (earth) is the origin of Earth, and we, humans are the origin of Human. As Humans are stored in the middle of Gun and Gon, the Gungon-danbup is made the second stage of practice.

From the works of the Five-movements of Heaven and the Six-energies (wood, fire, earth, mutual-fire, metal, and water) on Earth, the Six-energies (wind, cold, heat, dampness, dryness, fire) come into existence. The Six-energies are the unified force of Water and Fire, which become Won-ki (primal-energy) and the temperature of the human body. There are 365 degrees of orbit in the cosmic-path around the sun, and the 365 bones and joints in the human body. Therefore, we should endure the hardship of the Haeng-gong from the cosmic perspective in practicing the Wonki-danbup.

From now on, in a calm atmosphere, begin your practice starting with Jung-bup of Il-sin-il-sim-bup, Gapbup of Gun.
